What is the difference between Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFFT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy?

ExpandCollapse

EFFT focuses on identifying and changing negative emotional cycles in the relationship and helping partners express their deeper feelings and needs to build safety and closeness. Gottman Method Couples Therapy emphasizes practical tools and skills—like communication strategies, conflict management, and building positive interactions. Both approaches can be very effective and are often blended together in practice.

What happens in a Couples Therapy session?

ExpandCollapse

Couples Therapy sessions involve talking through current struggles and patterns in your relationship. The therapist will guide you and your partner(s) in practicing new ways of communicating, noticing underlying emotions, and building tools for resolving conflict and reconnecting. Each couples’ therapy process is tailored to their unique needs.

What if my partner is hesitant about therapy?

ExpandCollapse

It’s very common for one partner to feel unsure about therapy. The first session can be a chance to learn more about how therapy works without committing long term. Many couples find that once they experience a session, it feels less intimidating and more like a supportive conversation than they expected. If that first session feels like an obstacle, then a brief consultation phone call with you and your partner may also help them feel more comfortable.

When should we consider couples therapy?

ExpandCollapse

Couples Therapy can help partners at any stage—whether you’re dating, living together, married, or separated and considering reconciliation. People often reach out for support with recurring arguments, communication difficulties, intimacy concerns, life transitions, or simply to strengthen their relationship.

Can I attend couples therapy if I have more than one partner?

ExpandCollapse

Yes! We welcome partners in non-monogamous or non-traditional relationships.
