Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy involves meeting for your therapy session outdoors, in a pre-determined location, where we walk on a path in a park or find a comfortable spot to sit as we engage in talk therapy. As your relationship with nature grows and changes, our sessions can as well. No matter what, we’ll always centre our work around your specific goals.

Do I need to bring anything for an Ecotherapy session?

ExpandCollapse

You may want to consider bringing the following:

  • In all weather, bring close-toed, comfortable shoes/boots.
  • When the weather is hot, bring breathable clothing, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, and insect repellent (if desired).
  • When the weather is cold, bring insulating clothing, gloves, hat, scarf, boots, sunscreen, and a water bottle.
  • When the temperature varies (i.e., fall and spring), bring lots of layers.

What if the weather is terrible on the day of my Ecotherapy session?

ExpandCollapse

Good question! If you’re not feeling like an Ecotherapy session is right because of the weather, we ask for a minimum of 90-minutes notice to reschedule the session to a virtual appointment.

We will need to reschedule to a virtual appointment if the following weather conditions occur:

  • Wind speeds of 35 km/h or higher.
  • Wind gusts of 60 km/h or higher.
  • Temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius (not including wind chill).
  • Temperatures that indicate a heat wave (30°C or higher for several days or a humidex rating of 40 or higher).
  • Hazardous trail conditions (e.g., excessive iciness on the trails and other conditions, such as flash foods, that could pose a safety risk).

How do I get started

ExpandCollapse

Start by filling out an intake form and choosing any of the therapists you’d like to connect with that provide Ecotherapy. Each therapist will email you within 48-hours to schedule a time and day for a phone consultation (10-15 minutes). From there you can learn more about each other and see who is the best fit for your needs.

Location specifics and an exact meeting location, along with a map, will be included in your booking confirmation.

Please note: All new clients require an Initial Consultation and Intake Session (conducted virtually) before booking their first Ecotherapy session.

Do we have to roll/walk the whole time?

ExpandCollapse

Not at all! Both route options have benches at the beginning and midpoint of the route. We can sit for part or all of the session. It’s up to you!

Can I suggest my own Ecotherapy route?

ExpandCollapse

While we understand the desire to choose your own Ecotherapy route, we unfortunately cannot modify the existing paths for safety reasons. We regularly review the paths we have chosen to ensure that you will have as safe, private, and enjoyable an experience as possible. We are open to suggestions about new paths and are happy to consider their feasibility in the future.

Would I benefit from Ecotherapy?

ExpandCollapse

Ecotherapy may be a good fit for you if:

  • You know spending time outside feels good to you;
  • You appreciate a more flexible approach to therapy outside of a conventional office;
  • You want to explore your connection with the natural environment as part of your work in therapy; and/or
  • You feel that eco-anxiety or climate anxiety contribute to your mental health concerns.

If Ecotherapy is not the right choice of therapy for you, that's okay! When we meet for our intake appointment, we will explore your goals for therapy and determine a path forward together.
